Eucalyptus Globulus Bluegum was discovered in 1792 by Labillardiere and introduced in Europe in 1856 by Ramel and later in Algeria, Egypt, Tahiti and New Caledonia. It was first planted in India by the early European settlers in the Simla hills in the Punjab region in the year 1860 and thence in the Nilgiris in South India. This tree grows well only in places between 4,000 and 7,000 feet high above the sea level. At the higher level it suffers from snowbreak and at the lower level its life is very limited and the growth is stunted.

The tree is noted for its rapid growth, the unpleasantly flavoured nectar of its blossoms, which is very attractive to bees and its ability to withstand long period of drought. This can survive a temperature as low as 20˚ F. In Victoria (England) there is a tree having grown to a height of 326˚ with a girth of 25˚. It is generally believed and at times asserted that these trees have a direct effect on Malaria, as they help in converting marshy lands into dry ones and thereby prevent the development of mosquitoes.

The tree yields good timber and Oil. The timber is used as fuel by the inhabitants of the district. The oil was distilled on a large scale, first in Southern France, Algeria and California and it became an article of commerce in the nineteenth century. The first factory was started in Australia in 1854 and it spread throughout. The first distillation in India was done in 1885, by Mr. S. Graham Wallace.
